Richard's solution worked a treat, though this ended on a bittersweet note with that last line. Even though he was referring to his own Mary Sue, it was as though he were referring to the here and now, too. Everyone was rightly rattled by their forgotten night, but Richard seemed depressed rather than relieved as well as exhausted.
