What a charming backstory. You took the core of what we had been told about Giles' past and wove it through his emotions and self-reflection in a very natural way.

Who does a man without a family put in the blank on the emergency contact card? Who do I put, now?

Thank you. My Giles is almost always full of detached self-appraisal. And he is usually falling short of his own standards.

I wonder if, at this point, he thought fleetingly of putting Ethan's name as emergency contact.

I doubt it. He and Ethan parted on very bad terms and he'd hardly want someone who was involved in the events of his youth that caused his father such pain to be listed as his emergeny contact. Besides, surely he didn't know where Ethan was by this time.

I'm quite fond of Ethan. He's a useful character. I used him to great effect in my first fanfic.
