General Question

I know that this is a site to post fic, but since I wasn't aware of any communities directly related to questions about Buffy canon, I thought this would be the best place to ask:

Is there any specific mention in BtVS, AtS, or any of the comic books related to how long a Watcher's association with a Potential Slayer lasts?  Any particular age when the Council deems the Potential "too old" to be Chosen, and is allowed to go on with their life without living under her Watcher's training?  18?  21?  Older?

I promise this is fic-related, I just didn't know where else to turn.
