Title: Better Every Year

Buffy faced the oncoming vampires with glee. “This is great!”

“Isn’t it?” Xander agreed, going down under two vamps.

Finishing hers, Buffy grabbed one. “I know!” She tossed it across a headstone, then tackled the other.

“Unbelievable!” Xander was so happy he laughed, even when the last vamp grabbed him.

“I know!” Buffy repeated, spinning the vamp around to stake it.

“It’s so cool.” Xander wiped slush from his pants. “Fifty degrees! The snow’s melting, did you see?”

Nodding, Buffy unbuttoned her jacket; she’d actually worked up a sweat. “Spring’s come to Cleveland. It’s like stopping an apocalypse every year!”

Notes: I was inspired by seeing a long-range forecast in which the temperature was supposed to be above 50 every single day, for the first time this year! Let's hope the prediction holds ...

Notes: Thanks to missmurchison, who gave me the idea when she wondered what Buffy was doing in Fort Wayne during my story "Frozen Dinner". Those of you who are following politics might recognize that I fudged the facts *just* a bit; it was the other half who was actually in Fort Wayne last week.

Buffy stared across the applauding audience. “I came to Fort Wayne for this?”

“It’s nice,” Willow said defensively. “There’s no Hellmouth.”

Nearby, a man dressed conspicuously in a black suit ignored two young women watching the speech. They couldn’t see much except waving signs.

“You’re sure she’s a demon?”

Willow nodded. “But I don’t know if she’s a good demon or a bad demon.”

“Maybe we’ll find out in November. But what about Chelsea?”

“Spock’s parents had a baby, and one parent wasn’t human.” When she caught Buffy’s expression, Willow blushed. “Guess I’ve been spending too much time around Xander.”

Buffy stared in disbelief at the huge hole opening at the intersection of Ontario and Superior Avenues. Behind her ranged a team of slayers, weapons ready, stamping their feet to stave off the cold.

“You’re seriously telling me this is not the Hellmouth opening?” she demanded.

Firefighters, TV crews, and utility workers worked around the hole. Some shot the slayers curious looks, but at the moment they had other things to worry about.

Xander just shook his head. “Water main break.”

Buffy shook her head. “Seriously?”

“Buff, it’s winter in Cleveland. The locals would welcome a Hellmouth, right about now.”

Few things bring me as much joy in ficdom as when I get to write something where the champion of mankind, the dark avenger, Broody McForehead himself comes across as a complete, utterly helpless, insecure and pitiful dork. Hey, call it a testament to the understated comedy style of Mr Boreanaz in scenes such as this one:

CORDELIA: Pfft! Sneaking off, right. Fred can barely tie her shoes without Mr. 'oh, you're my big, fat hero!' around.
ANGEL: ...You think I'm fat?

“No.” She might as well starting lying before she gets to LA.
