The Warrior


The crater was still smoking months after the Hellmouth had been destroyed, taking with it all that once was Sunnydale. Tara's grave, Joyce's, even her own, the one from which she'd clawed her way out a lifetime ago; the inscriptions on their headstones obliterated in the white heat that swept everything away in a fiery storm of annihilation.

Buffy searched the darkness of the depths, looking for a glimmer, a sign that something remained. Finally she sighed, dropping a single red flower into the hole.

For remembrance. For a fallen warrior of the light. The only memorial he'd ever have.

The 69er is similar to a drabble, except you only get 69 words for your story. Titles don't count but long ones are frowned on. No summaries or other introductory information allowed (except ratings).

The 369 is an expansion on the 69er. Three 69ers that share a common theme or subject. Each 69er has to stand completely alone, and each has its own title. The entire 369 has a title as well.

Prompt: Mea Culpa
Confessional

The sound of weeping drifted through the open door, up the stairs towards the woman huddled in the corner of the darkened bedroom.

“I’m sorry, Father. I tried to make it stop, truly.” Drusilla rocked rhythmically against the headboard, clutching her rosary tighter, slipping each blood-slicked bead through fumbling fingers as she prayed. “Through my fault.”

In the drawing room below, her mother held the body of another daughter close, sheltering her from further onslaught from the beast that had ripped out her throat. The child was torn from her arms, tossed aside. Tears turned to screams.

“Mea máxima culpa.”

This was my first ever attempt at writing fanfic and I was learning as I went along. I started writing it after 'Damage' aired and finished it after the finale. I had some wonderful betas along the way and folk who gave much needed help and advice of many sorts onetwomany, ceitnicangus, kellyhk, qkellie latestartercds and, the one who stayed, bogwitch

I decided not to edit this first part to what became a WIP Series called L.A. Times because I want it to stand as evidence of the progress I think I have made as a writer.

Setting: AtS 5 just after 'Damage', going its own way because I was 'Jossed' very early on.
